How do you know if you need counseling help with alcoholism or drug addiction?

Here are some questions for you to consider:

  • Are you addicted to drugs?

  • Have you tried stopping, but keep coming back to your drug of choice?

  • Is your drinking causing you problems?

  • Are you going to work messed up after a weekend of partying?

  • Are you getting poor work performance evaluations because your drug habit is messing up your memory and performance?

  • Are you sabotaging your work because of hangovers?

  • Are your friends and family distancing themselves from you because of your drinking or drug habits?

  • Got a DUI?

  • Do you spend a lot of money on alcohol or drugs?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you are struggling with addictive behaviors.

The Need for Evidence-based Addiction Treatments in the Recovery Community

Where is the evidence-based science and treatment in rehab and recovery?

The recovery community and rehab centers need science-based and evidence-based treatments, not out-dated moralistic philosophies that shame people and fail to treat the brain disease of addiction.

Too many sick people are being shamed and demoralized in recovery meetings, recovery residences, and rehabs across this country, which ultimately sets sick people up for failure, and then they are blamed for having 'character defects' after they relapse.

Health and science-based treatments avoid the moralization of an illness such as addiction. Addiction is a brain disease, not a moral failing. You are not bad and you are not defective. The human condition is part of life; if you have an allergy to cats or diabetes, the conditions do not make you a bad person or a defective person. An addicted brain lacks genetic neurological components that help to put the brakes on impulsive reactions to psychological pain.  In other words, with addiction-based psychotherapy treating the underlying causes of your addiction, you may develop better coping-skills, prevent relapses, and ultimately maintain long-term sobriety.

I, personally, have seen too much shaming coming from 12-Step sponsors and meetings. It's time to realize that these groups are great ways to support a recovering addict's recovery, but they are not the definitive word on addiction recovery. Too many extremely expensive drug and alcohol recovery treatment programs are based on very low-quality 12-based programming. However, an evidence-based recovery approach using neuroscience-based therapeutic treatments is more effective for most individuals than just attending recovery meetings.
